DJ Khaled – To The Max ft. Drake

“To the Max” is a song written and performed by American musician DJ Khaled and Canadian rapper Drake. The song was released on June 5, 2017, by We the Best and Epic Records as a promotional single from Khaled’s tenth studio album, Grateful (2017).

The song contains a sample of “Gus Get Em Right” by Jay-O and vocal samples of Jodie Aysha from her song “Heartbroken” which was remixed by T2 and “Lit” by 1WayFrank.

“To The Max” explores the height of success which both Drake and Khaled achieved during their careers; describing their music reaches new maximums, their albums going multi-platinum and they fact they are on an other level compared to the competition.

DJ Khaled began teasing the song on his Instagram, asking if “the Drake vocals came in yet” as the pair attempt to recreate the buzz behind their previous hit “For Free,” featured on Khaled’s 2016 project Major Key.

This track is rumoured to be one of two coming from the duo on Grateful after Drizzy referenced one of Khaled’s catchphrases, asking “why give ‘em one when you can give ’em another one?”

Most of the “To The Max” production is a sped up sample of Jay-O’s “Gus Get Em Right,” which you can specifically hear in the intro, refrain and outro of the song. The style of this song is inspired by the popular Miami “jook” music, a scene familiar to Miami resident DJ Khaled and common visitor, Drake.

This track also sampled T2’s “Heartbroken,” a U.K. garage/bassline track which rose to classic status after regular plays in British clubs at the end of the noughties era, further expanding Drake’s love for British culture.

“To the Max” is in the key of D Flat Major. The tempo is 150 BPM with a time signature of 4/4 time.
