Future – Mask Off

“Mask Off” is a deeper cut on Future’s self-titled album. This track is somewhat of a “rags-to-riches” story that explores the surface of Future’s past, from trapping to living a life of luxury.

The slow and syrupy production by Metro Boomin samples the 1976 song, “Prison Song” by Tommy Butler, which featured Carlton Williams. The melancholic tune may be an indictment of mass incarceration, but the Future’s emergent riches insulate him from the punishment that is unfailingly administered to countless of men living in the despair. A religious message can be heard in the sample before Future’s second verse. This seems to belie extravagant lifestyle flaunted in this record.

“Mask Off” went on to become Future’s highest-charting single ever, peaking at No.5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also certified 3X platinum by the RIAA.

The #MaskOffChallenge, a social media craze where participants dance and play instruments to the song, was a huge factor in the song’s popularity.

The music video was released on May 4, 2017. It also features cameos from Amber Rose.

On May 23, 2017, Future dropped the official remix of the song, featuring a guest verse from Kendrick Lamar.
